If you are going to read ebooks, then you need to understand the different types of ebook and their copyright protection. Keep in mind that the purpose of copyright is to encourage authors and publishers by giving them exclusive rights to their works for a limited period of time. If they can’t make a living, they will stop writing and publishing and we don’t want that to happen.
Types of Free eBooks
Free eBooks protected by copyright
- Sample eBooks are offered by many publishers entice reader to buy the ebook. The ebook itself is not free, just the sample chapters. Unfortunately some websites do not make the distinction between a free ebook and a free sample of an ebook crystal clear.
- Free eBooks include complete original works made available by publishers under certain circumstances. These books may be available for a limited time period or for a special audience. These ebooks are usually protected by copyright.
- Free ebook compilations of articles from free articles website like eZineArticles are copyrighted by the original author.
- Original works you may freely download in PDF or other format are mostly likely covered by copyright, even if they don’t include a copyright notice. Often these ebooks are not handled by publishers at all.

Martha has her Sony Reader, Oprah loves her Kindle and iPad, but I’m delighted to have a NookColor ebook reader.
Things I like about the NookColor
- Right Size: I’ve always like small computers and gadgets and my Nook is just the right size and weight. An inch or ounce more and it would be too big and heavy, an inch less and it might be too small for serious reading, but perhaps an ounce to two less would probably be a good thing.
- Fair Price: Cut to the chase: I’m cheap and my friends and relatives all know it. The iPad is gorgeous but too expensive and too big. The NookColor offers the biggest bang for the buck. It’s affordable and relatively inexpensive, but not cheaply made.
- Great Color: Seriously, would anyone really want to buy a device that doesn’t do color? My first few computers displayed green type on a black background – those were not the good old days.
- Touch and Go: After years of using a computer keyboard, it’s refreshing to pinch and swipe the screen and make instant changes. A touch screen as a requirement is a no brainer for me.
- Dedicated Ebook Reader: I couldn’t justify spreading $249 on another toy. Been there, done that, and most of those gadgets ended up being recycled. I’m a reader and I love the idea of being able to sample books before I buy them or look for the same ebook at the library. I like it that I was able to get a device designed by the real bookstore for book lovers.
- Android Operating System: It’s hard to admit that you like an operating system, but the Android system means that my Nook will be more than just a dedicated ebook reader. I expect to NookColor become a full-fledged tablet communication and entertainment system. In 2011 Barnes and Noble will be adding custom Android apps that will improve the reading experience and make the device even easier to use.
There are a few things I don’t like a whole lot: the file organization is cumbersome to say the least. I want to be able to move things around a bit and delete files without connecting to my PC or Banrnes & Noble. The battery needs to be recharged every day or too if you use the Nook a lot. That really hasn’t been a problem, and I was able to watch a full length feature film (MP4) without using up a lot of juice.

We don’t lived in a black and white or greyscale world, so why would we want a tablet ereader that doesn’t display color?
Color ereaders allow you to view content that just doesn’t look right in black and white. If you use your ebook reader solely for reading fiction, you may not really need
